Upcoming Traffic Control Changes

New Schools, New Traffic Patterns: Important Updates for Crossings & Garry Station Residents

As the neighbourhood continues to grow and develop, the City of Lethbridge has both short and long-term plans for effective traffic control. We are also committed to continually monitoring and modifying these plans as needed.

What is changing?

May 2025

  • Start of construction for the Piers residential development

  • Start of construction for the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division’s new elementary school near the intersection of Caledonia Blvd W at Abitibi Rd W.

September 2025

  • Opening of Lethbridge School Division’s new West Coulee Station Elementary School in Garry Station.

September 2026

  • Opening of new Holy Spirit Catholic School Division’s new elementary school

How will this impact traffic?

A traffic assessment study has been recently completed in the areas of Halifax Rd and Abitibi Rd W and Abitibi Rd and Caledonia Blvd. W. These studies show traffic is currently well within the road capacity. As these residential neighbourhoods continue to develop, and the new schools open, we do anticipate this will change and there will be increased traffic congestion. We will do our best to mitigate these issues as the ultimate road network and neighbourhoods develop.

What will be done to minimize impact?

Ahead of these changes, some measure will be put in place to ensure everyone’s safety. This includes all-way stops and speed limit reductions along Abitibi Rd. W. We expect these changes to be in place in May 2025 so motorists, pedestrians and cyclists can become familiar with the new traffic controls well before the West Coulee Station Elementary School opens in September 2025.
